What is Lichen Sclerosus?

What is Lichen Sclerosus?

In short terms, Lichen Sclerosus is a condition created by the devil that affects the vulva.
If you want to get technical, it is the thinning of the vulva which creates dryness, tearing and itching.
Lichen Sclerosus is a rare understudied underfunded mysterious disorder no one truly understands. Face it, hardly anyone even knows what the term vulva means.  It is believed to possibly be an autoimmune or genetic disorder. LS is not contagious. So, no it is NOT a sexually transmitted disease, and you can NOT spread it to your partner. It is also believed that LS mainly affects girls going through puberty or postmenopausal women. Although recent studies and doctors believe that it may be more common than we first thought. It is also important to note that LS does increase women's chances of cancer like Vulva Cancer. Women with this disorder need to make sure to check their skin much more often for any changes.
The history of Lichen Sclerosus is interesting to say the least. With the lack of understanding and research, doctors have practically been treating this disease blindly. Not to mention the fact that us women have internal reproductive organs, us lucky "queens."
If you are easily queasy, consider yourself warned now. Although upsetting, it is important to understand what our sisters went through not that long ago. They paved the way for us ladies today, and the world of vulvar health.
