A Vulv-What?
The other day we were playing a game with our friends. πΎ It was one of those couple quiz games, and it mentioned a vagina when it was actually the vulva! π Of course, I had to say something, and said, “Its not really the vagina, it’s actually called the vulva.” ✨ Our friends suddenly had a puzzled look on their face, and slowly repeated a “vulv-?” π€My girl friend then apprehensively said, “Isn’t that in your throat?” π I explained to her that the vulva was the external genitalia, and that the vagina was actually like a hallway to our cervix. π³ To which her boyfriend chimed in, “What’s the difference? Does it actually matter?” π₯± I explained the importance of knowing the correct terms, and everyone just continued playing the game. π₯΄ It’s been a couple of days since this incident, and I have tried to let it go. ππ» I don’t believe he meant to be insensitive, but I would be lying if I said his comment didn’t bother me a bit. π¬ If I would have known what a vulva even was, maybe I would have known what to look out for. π Maybe if we took away the hurtful stigmas and educated others correctly, we could save lives. π Maybe if we knew what it was, we would know what signs and symptoms aren’t right. π« Maybe I would have known to take my symptoms more seriously, and I wouldn’t be facing a wide local excision of my VULVA in the future. π€Έ♀️ It might not seem important to you, but imagine losing your arm, and everyone said you lost your foot!!! π¦Ά Vulvastrong warriors, you are going to experience situations like these. ‼️ But don’t let it bring you or your mission down. π π»♀️ Understand that it’s coming from a lack of understanding and social stigmas that have been around for ages! πNo one likes to talk about something they don’t know or something that seems “embarrassing.” ππ»♀️ We have to normalize these types of conversations so that we can save lives & promote research. π©π¬ My mom went to the DERMATOLOGIST one time and mentioned that she had recently had a WLE due to VIN. He wanted to know what VIN was. My mom said it was a condition that effected her vulva, and he said, “Do you mean your uvula!?” π« THIS IS NOT OK! π« Stay strong vulvastrong queens. πͺπ»π Know that you will hear/see/find things that will upset you due to the lack of knowledge the world seems to have of the seemingly mysterious vulva.π΅️♀️ Do not let it get you down! ⬇️ Use it as motivation to bring awareness and educate others!! π©π« If you don’t feel comfortable sharing your story, don’t be afraid to let others know when they are saying the wrong terms. π« No matter what anyone has to say, awareness saves lives! πͺπ» At least our friends know what a vulva even is now! π§ And that is a win for me!! π
